Mr Stephen Hodgson of BSSH reports:
I was proud to lead a team consisting of Anuj Mishra, Plastic Surgeon, Kanekal Darshan, Anaesthetist, Rosemary Swerdlow, Physiotherapist, Jayne Rowland, Theatre Nurse and Caroline Walton, Anaesthetic Nurse to HSH between October 29th and November 6th 2016. This trip was supported by funding form the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). It was very encouraging to see how well the hospital and staff had recovered from the challenges of the Ebola epidemic. We were very impressed with the cleanliness and organisation of the clinic and operating theatre. The standard of nursing care was high in all areas including the ward. The progress since my first visit in 2011 is very impressive. Bala and Anthony represent excellent recent additions
We saw nearly 100 out patients and performed 17 operations almost exclusively on the upper limb. I have formed the view that this long term project is still on track and have committed to further BSSH supported trips in 2017
Sadly whilst we were there a severe fire badly damaged the physiotherapy department and store room. Coming so soon after Ebola the impact on the hospital staff was palpable. We were only able to promise the continued support of the many international friends including BSSH and the view that the same powers of resilience that has got the hospital staff through Ebola well enable them to recover from this latest setback
ReSurge Africa are delighted to learn that further surgical missions to Sierra Leone are planned for 2017.
